To fulfill this demand, the establishment that regulates the gTLDs, ICANN, launched the .MOBI extension in 2005. The first registrations were enabled in September 2006, and the idea behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it must comply with certain terms. In other words, all .MOBI websites need to be designed to be opened without problems by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” established by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in collaboration with the .MOBI Registry organization. These have to do with how a web page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The regulations have induced some concerns given the fact that the universal top-level domain extension is the only one that specifies what devices must be able to open a website and the way in which this should happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a web page should be built in such a way as to be opened by most web browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
